This is the home page of the Swadlincote Messiah Choral Society. The society has been in existence since 1995 although the first performance of Handel's Messiah at Hill Street Baptist Church, Swadlincote, took place on 22nd December 1901! It has been an annual event since this time with only 2 performances having been missed. It is regarded by many as the start of Christmas celebrations in South Derbyshire.

In 1928 Walter Jones wrote, "Handel's Messiah has a secure place in the affections of the British people. It sweeps our heartstrings with its various emotions; it tells a story familiar to us all. The birth of our Saviour; His attributes; His sorrows, sufferings and the death. It tells of the resurrection and pours forth the most glorious ascriptions of praise to God." Keats says "a thing of beauty is a joy forever, it's loveliness increases." "Truly this must be applied to Handel's immortal Oratorio."
